Digital twins: double power for AOI
In addition to AI, the use of digital twins plays a significant role in increasing efficiency in AOI systems. A virtual offline programming station can be used to generate a digital image of the AOI system that contains all the real parameters.

Another interesting area of application is the modeling of electronic assemblies that do not yet physically exist but are soon to be produced and tested. Although there is already a considerable amount of helpful information available for AOI test program generation in the form of well-prepared CAD data, there are still a number of gaps for comprehensive parameterization.
Automatic generation of AOI libraries
Extensive package libraries often have to be maintained for the generation of AOI test programmes. With the MagicClick function, the PILOT AOI system software from GÖPEL electronic enables the fully automatic generation of an AOI library based on existing data and a sample assembly. A digital twin of the assembly is generated from the real object and the AOI test programme including library is created automatically.
In order to be able to take this step before the first assembly is manufactured, detailed geometry data of the board and components is required, which can be generated via ODB++process. The PILOT AOI system software imports this data, which enables faster and more accurate parameter specification. However, production parameters, camera configuration and lighting arrangement still need to be simulated in order to generate a complete digital image of the assembly.
Benefits of the digital AOI twin
A digital twin of the AOI system itself offers considerable advantages for the manufacturing process. Regular updates and upgrades in the software and hardware infrastructure as well as comprehensive training and support measures increase the efficiency of the AOI system. A digital twin of the complete AOI system is the ideal concept for supporting these requirements and realising them with high quality and speed. A single, exchangeable file containing detailed information about the AOI system enables the digital twin of the AOI system to be distributed and used as required. This allows users to generate test programmes cost-effectively, enabling early troubleshooting and training without impacting the real system.
The PILOT AOI system software supports all system types from GÖPEL electronic's SPI and AOI portfolio. A digital twin at GÖPEL electronic's headquarters significantly improves service and support, as virtual systems including measurement data can be provided quickly. This reduces the effort required for remote support or service calls on the AOI system.
